This is the world’s first consumer-grade probe lens which focuses from 2:1 macro to infinity and with a compelling wide-angle ‘Bug Eye’ perspective. This wide-angle design results in greater depth of field at close focusing distances than is possible with conventional macro lens. The background details are now recognizable.
The front lens barrel is water-proof affording the ability to obtain unique perspectives. The LED ring light, mounted at the tip of the lens, provides light to reduce unnecessary shadows.
The package includes a white USB cable dimmer (with power adjustment), black USB cable (no power adjustment), lens bag and metal case. Please note that the LED is powered by an external battery (not included in the package).
Macro lenses in the market tend to have a long focal length (from 60mm to 180mm) and the subject fills most of the frame, isolating it from the surrounding environment. Our Laowa 24mm, allows you to focus very close – 2 cm at 2:1 – to the subject, showing more detail and texture. At the same time, you can enjoy a compelling wide angle ‘Bug Eye’ view (84.1°) so that more of the background details may be included in the image. You can easily create a very informative and stunning macro bug-eye perspective that no other lens can do! The fact that it can focus really close to the subject enables far more shooting possibilities.
As macro photographers ourselves, we usually face the problem of not being able to shoot smaller subjects. With our Laowa probe, you can now take advantage of the 2:1 maximum magnification to shoot very small bugs and reveal details that cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is particularly useful for videographers since both finer details and environmental backgrounds can be captured in one shot.
The wide-angle design also means much greater depth of field at close distances compared to the telephoto macro lens, more background details are now visible. Being able to focus so close but still have depth of field is a significant advantage, both in studio and in outdoor photography.
Do not understand this weird design? For traditional macro lenses, you need to get really close to your subject in order to take a good macro shot. But some areas are just simply inaccessible. Thanks to the 40 cm (15.7 in.) long barrel, you can focus really close to the subject but still keep yourself and your camera a reasonable distance away. This feature is super useful and makes your macro shooting so much easier. Imagine how convenient it will be to shoot a frog hiding in the bushes using our Probe lens, compared to getting your typical 100mm macro lens super close to it to avoid leaves blocking your subject.
You think that’s cool enough? Think again! To bring you an even more exciting perspective and take your photos or video to the next level, we have made the front barrel of the Laowa probe waterproof. The waterproof design also implies that shooting in dusty environments or with fine powders is not going to be a problem anymore. You can literally use it anywhere.
Macro photography is about Depth of Field and smaller apertures are usually required. An LED ring light, powered by an optional external battery, is embedded in the lens tip to provide additional lighting for focus assistance. In most cases, the more lighting you have on your subject, the better your shot will look. An included variable-output Control cable lets you adjust the amount of light from the LED.
- Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4mm equivalent focal length.
- Unique macro lens design offers a greater-than-life-size 2:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 1.5' and a working distance of just 0.8".
- The long, tubular lens barrel contributes to producing a distinct bug-eye perspective and, despite the short working distance, the length of the lens barrel places the camera at a comfortable shooting distance.
- Wide-angle 24mm focal length affords greater depth of field and more surrounding detail than traditional telephoto macro designs, which tend to isolate subject matter with shallow depth of field.
- Optical design includes two extra-low dispersion elements that control color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy. One extra refractive index element is also featured, which reduces spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
- Slim 0.8" front diameter allows performing unique "slide-in" shots as well as affords a greater range of close-up, inconspicuous shooting opportunities. The smaller front diameter also makes it easier to illuminate close-up subjects from the front.
- The front of the lens is also waterproof, allowing you to comfortably work just under the surface of water or in dusty environments.
- The front of the lens also has a built-in LED ring light, which is powered via a micro-USB port on the barrel, to provide some illumination on close-up subjects for easier focusing.
- Designed for use as a close-up, macro lens, the manual focus operation also lets you focus at infinity.
- Seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
